Public and Private Land Ownership Maps

This web page provides access to two pre-built map series using the USGS 1:100,000 scale topographic map boundaries as the indexing system.  Two maps are available for each 100k quadrangle, representing separate looks at land ownership:

  • Land Management Maps
    Updated July 2012
    • These maps are produced by the Montana Natural Heritage Program from its Land Management Mapping database.
      • The maps depict three main categories of land management:
      • Public Lands
      • Conservation Easements (Note: conservation easements do not imply public access to any lands)
      • Managed Areas: This designation includes lands such as wildlife refuges, Research Natural Areas, wilderness, etc.
  • Private Land Ownership (map and text listing)
    Updated August 2012
    • NOTE: Maps that include any portion of Flathead, Missoula, or Silver Bow counties will be incomplete for those portions of the maps that fall in those counties because these counties do not currently support coding to facilitate identification of private lands.
    • These maps are produced by NRIS program staff in cooperation with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks
    • They are focused on private land ownership, and show the owners of any contiguous tract of land greater than 40 acres owned by a single party. The "Private Land Listing" column in the table below contains a link to a text file of owners as shown on map.
    • Broad categories of public land ownership are shown.
The maps are provided in Adobe PDF format and are updated on an annual basis. They are designed to be printed at a size of 36 by 30 inches on a large format printer.
