The seminar will give an overview of the Montana Bird Distribution Database and Website, which offer a wealth of information on where birds are found in our state. The website, a joint effort among the Montana Natural Heritage Program, Montana Audubon, and Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, was based on the Montana Bird Distribution Database.
Created in 1991, this database contains breeding, migration, or wintering areas information about each species recorded in Montana. It also includes basic information on every bird record submitted — the who, what, when, and where. Specimen data and photographs are also stored in the database. It is housed at the NRIS Montana Natural Heritage Program at the Montana State Library in Helena and maintained by Montana Audubon.
The Montana Natural Heritage Program is part of the Montana Natural Resource Information System (NRIS), which was established seventeen years ago by the Legislature. NRIS, a division of the State Library, acts as a clearinghouse for natural resource information.
This seminar is free of charge; no registration required. For more information, call (406) 444-5357 or (406) 444-3989. Interested individuals are also encouraged to visit the Montana Natural Heritage Program’s website at http://nhp.nris.state.mt.us.
