| RJ Zimmer, GIS Center Manager for the City of Helena and Lewis & Clark
County, is scheduled to be the guest speaker at the next NRIS seminar. His
presentation is set for Friday, September 20 from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm in the
conference room of the Montana State Library at 1515 East 6th Avenue in
Helena.
The seminar is entitled, "The Challenges of Rural Addressing for e911." Lewis and Clark County implemented a Rural Addressing system to meet its needs for GIS information, mapping for emergency response, and to support enhanced 9-1-1 services. The four-year project began with GPS field mapping of structures, driveways, and roadways. The County worked with the local fire districts to map residences and roadways and to devise an addressing schema for the rural, un-addressed areas of the county. Zimmer said, "The county achieved the state-required 95% address match rate that triggered the release of state-collected e911 funds and allowed the use of the e911 system." Zimmer added, "The County is currently considering strategies for creating an Addressing Center for the City and County, and maintaining most of the addressing files and systems." This presentation will include background regarding why the project was
implemented, as well as details on project planning, road naming, and
field mapping. In addition, Zimmer will discuss the many challenges and
rewards associated with the project. The seminar will conclude with an
audience question and answer session.
