Census Information Topic of NRIS Presentation

(HELENA) --- Kris Larson, GIS Programmer/Analyst with the Census and Economic Information Center (CEIC) in the Montana Department of Commerce, is scheduled to be the guest speaker at the next NRIS Seminar.  The presentation is set for Friday, January 17 at 3:00 pm in the Conference Room of the Montana State Library at 1515 East 6th Avenue in Helena.

The seminar, entitled, “Using GIS with Census 2000 Data,” will include the types of data collected and tabulated by the U.S. Census Bureau, the data release timetable, how to access the data, and how to incorporate it into Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

The Census Bureau’s “Public Law “ data, which is used primarily for legislative redistricting, and the four summary files that were released are examples of datasets available from the decennial census.  The most recently released summary file consists of over 800 detailed tables of social, economic, and housing characteristics.

Besides the decennial censuses, the U.S. Census Bureau also conducts economic censuses in years ending in ‘2 and ‘7.  Data collection has begun for the 2002 economic censuses and tabulated data will be available in the fall of 2003.   Larson said, “I encourage anyone interested in learning what kind of information is available and which dataset to use to attend the seminar.”

This seminar is free of charge.  For more information, call 841-2743 or 444-5357.
