NRIS partners with USGS for National Hydrography Dataset

Montana State Library is pleased to announce that the Natural Resource Information System (NRIS) has been funded through a one-year cooperative agreement with the USGS to provide stewardship and coordination for the Montana portion of the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD).

The National Hydrography Dataset is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that contains information about surface water features such as lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, springs and wells.  NRIS offers Montana's NHD for download at http://nris.state.mt.us/nsdi/nhd/ .

This project has the following specific objectives:

  • Coordinate local efforts to improve hydrographic data and provide support to NHD users throughout Montana
  • Implement a process for accepting changes to a commonly accepted high resolution Hydrography for Montana.
  • Maintain and distribute the best available, most commonly accepted GIS data about Montana’s surface water.
  • Implement a seamless method of submitting locally developed data for inclusion in a National Hydrography Dataset.
  • The success of this effort will largely depend upon having an active Working Group to provide guidance to the project. If you are interested in participating, please contact Sibyl Govan at sgovan@mt.gov .
